Video Mise En Scene

For our music video we need to concentrate on what we want to be seen in our video. We need to think about what looks good and what are some conventions in a Grime music video as that is what genre we are doing. Looking at some similar UK Grime artists and where they located their videos, the one that we liked most was Kano ft The Streets - Nite Nite.
This video is located on the beach cutting from night shots to day shots and it goes well with this type of song. This song is very similar to the song that we are doing with the emotions reaching out to the audience and it is sort of a slow song like ours.

In our music video one of the main locations we will be using is Brighton beach and the pier. Hopefully it will be a clear cold night so that will give off a good effect and also during the day it should be nice. We will be using Tyler's car and we will be shooting a couple of shots inside and outside of it. These types of shots inside Tyler's car are typical and they are in nearly every Grime video. They use these shots to show a sense of wealth and power.
On screen there will be shots of Casey walking along the pier and the along the sea front skimming stones across the water to give off a sad and depressed look. He will be standing not dead in the centre of the camera as we will want to show the audience what is behind him in the back ground. The shots of the waves will be in our video asit gives off a calm relaxing mood and it goes with the lyrics in our song.
In this video 'Nite Nite' it is different to most Grime videos as we are not seeing the big flashy cars and the flashy clothes and chains. Kano looks very casual and he looks approachable. He is just walking casually down the sea front and in the flash backs shown when he is walking with the girl down the road he is just being normal like any other person would. Not like in the big American rappers videos where they would most probably would be in a flashy car driving down the road.

Grime Genre

As a group we have decided that the genre we are going to do as our video is UK Grime. We have looked at many different videos that relate to this and many famous artists that this genre relates to. For example we looked at videos from tinie tempah including pass out, frisky and miami to ibiza. In miami to ibiza, tinie tempah collaborates with the swedish house mafia which are a drum n bass band. Here are some images from this video. In our video we will use similar images to this as it will suit our genre of UK Grime.
In these photo's tinie tempah (the artist) is a stereotype of a typical grime artist. This is due to his clothes. For example he is wearing sunglasses and black leather jackets. This is what we will be using in our music videos.

West Papua Torture Story

What happened?

In the video we see many civilians of West Papua being tortured in brutal ways such as; being kicked in the face, strangled, trodden on and just severely beaten. I think this is totally out of order and should not be happening, I think that there must be a problem in West Papua for this to be happening, the people that are torturing the civilians must feel out of power or need to get a lot of anger off their backs for them to want to do this because there is no other reasonable explanation. So I think that there is a power issue in West Papua and this needs to be resolved soon before this torture leads to death.

Would this of come to light if there was no mobile phone footage?

I don’t think that this would have come to light, because after seeing the footage it looks like a normal occurrence and that it has been happening for some time so therefore no one would have known that this was happening.

How has this type of reportage ( mobile phones used by non-journalists) influenced the way we receive and perceive information?
This type of reportage has opened the worlds eyes to many things that we didn’t think occurred however they do, I think it also makes the rest of the world realise the seriousness of what is happening in other countries and makes people realise how privileged we are.

What other examples have you seen recently?

An example of this that we have seen recently is the death of Neda Agha Soltan, we saw her die on a video phone during the Iranian protests in 2009. This is a very similar incident however people would have known about this because it was at a worldwide event

Favourite 2 Music Videos; Guardian website

Favourite 2 Music Videos:

Cee Lo Green – F**k You

My favourite music video on the Guardian website was the “Cee lo Green – F**k You” video. There were many reasons behind this being my favourite video and one of these is because the music has a very pop style to it. And pop is one of my favourite styles of music, also the video is an amusing one and also pretty different from regular popular videos.

I like the idea of a younger person doing the performance in the video, it gives younger people a chance to enjoy the video because alot of pop videos these days are very sex related and immediately blocks out the younger generation.

Another reason why I like this video is because of the way it is a type of storyline type of video and that we are progressing through the video with the song, this is because we the person in the video walking through several different locations.

However overall I think this was my favourite video because of the genre of the song and the way that the video will be targeting a younger audience than a normal pop video. My favourite part of this video is the fact that we are taken through the video throughout the song and are shown several different locations.

Radio Head – Live in Praha

I really enjoyed this video because of the way that the band got the audience involved and the way they pleased there audience. Even before the band began singing the crowd were screaming and clapping and getting excited about the bands performance.

Another thing that I like about this video is showing how good the bands talent and ability is, this shows that the band are not edited like some artists in the music industry at the moment and that they can both perform live and record a song in a studio.

Another thing that I like about this video is that the band are playing instruments, this shows that they are multi talented and that they are a complete band that can both sing and play instruments.

My favourite part of this video is the instrumental parts of the song, it shows really good quality in music and instrument playing and shows that the band are very versatile and also enjoy their music, this is because alot of artists neglect instruments in their songs and just sing and rely on the rest of the band/partners to play the instruments.

Poster Idea

This was just a brief idea of what our groups concert poster may look like.

Learning Green Screen. Continued

When my group were editing the video that we done today, using final cut. I did not see how the group used the programme and edited it because I was helping Miss pack away the equipment. So a target of mine in the next half term will be to learn how to use Final Cut.

Performance in Music Videos

Performance in music videos:

Giggz – Look What The Cat Dragged In; Grime.

There isn’t much performance in this video, which is typical of a Grime video, for the majority of the video we see Giggz standing in the same position, occasionally he will dance but not for long. We see lots of women in the video, which is also seen a lot in Grime videos, we see the women dancing for the majority of the video or we see the women around Giggz himself.

We see a lot of pointing towards the audience and making eye contact from Giggz, he points towards the audience and also himself almost as if to say; im the one you should be looking at.

So looking at a very typical Grime video; we see that Grime videos tend to not have a lot of performance in them from the artist themselves but the people around the artist use a lot of performance.

The artist themselves tend to stand in one position for the majority of the music video trying their best to look cool around there group of friends.

Kings Of Leon – Sex On Fire; Rock

This video is a very conventional rock video, in mise en scene is very dark, the costume is very rock like, i.e. vests, dark clothes and lots of jewellery. We see lots of instruments which is seen in a lot of rock music videos.

The performance is what you would expect to see in most music videos, a “crazy” type of performance, there is one part of the video where we see 3 of the group are pinning down the other person in the group which makes the audience ask the question. “what are they doing?”

We don’t see much dancing, again this is expected from this type of video because the main type of performance we expect to see is instrument playing. However we do see lip syncing, and making eye contact with the audience which is common in most videos let alone rock videos.

Katy Perry – Teenage Dream; Pop

Compared to a regular Pop video this video is quite different, and very different compared to Katy Perry’ previous videos. For instance ‘I kissed a girl’ and ‘California girls’. Where we see a lot of dancing and over the top dancing with a sexual tone to the video. Whereas this video has no dancing but still has a very sexual side to it.

This video is different because she has swapped over the top dancing to over the top sexual scenes; this shows that she is a good versatile artist because this song is currently number 2 in the UK Charts (14th September 2010)

Compared to regular pop and Katy Perry videos this video lacks performance, because we only see her on her feet for about 10 seconds of the video. The rest of the video she is laying on a bed or sitting in a car.

3 example screen shots

The reason why i chose the 3 screen shots below of the song Example - Watch the sun come up; the three screen shots that i have chosen i feel that my group could use in our video. I chose this video specifically because i know that alot of the video is based on a beach and me and my group are planning to film our video on Brighton Beach.

I think that the best screenshot that i got was the one when Example is looking back at the girl that is in the video, i really like this shot and was planning to have a shot like this in our video; after seeing how successful this shot was in the example video i definitely want to use it in our video.

Overall i think that all of the shots that i got were very good and successful and would also fit in with our video, because the story-line in our video is that Casey (Me) and Chloe (Performer from outside group) are to have an argument and grow closer together and i think that a similar thing has happened in this video.

3 Example Screenshots

Typical Target Audience

For our genre of UK Grime we have to be very specific about who our target audience would be, there are many things that we would have to look out for and know what we are looking for. For instance costume is a very important part, stereo typically we would expect our typical target to wear; Jeans, trainers, a leather jacket and some sunglasses. This is a very stereotypical Grime outfit.
This outfit is very famous among several Grime artists over the world, 2 very familiar artists being Tinie Tempah and Example. These two reguarly wear these types of clothes and rarely change from this. However the difference between an English rapper and American rapper is farrly obvious. For example English fans would expect to See Tinie Tempah and Example in skinny leg jeans, whereas an American rapper like Jay Z or Eminem would wear normal length jeans because it is more stereotypical to regular grime as oppose to UK Grime.
However with the song we have chosen (Example - Millionaires) we will have to choose wisely, whilst Tinie Tempah and Example wear very similar clothes they are also very different, Tinie will wear skinny jeans and a leather jacket with very neutral colours, such as; Grey, black and white. Whereas Example would wear more bright colours such as green, yellow or blue because this suits the style of his music as energetic and lively.
So when we think of our typical audience we will have to have a very broad understanding of what grime fans want to see and target them in the best way possible when it comes to costuming.
Once we have decided our main costume idea we will have to think of things such as posters and advertisements in order to sell our band to the public. At the moment our band does not have a name so our posters are not complete. Our temporary name is 'The Nathans' once we have confirmed a group name we will begin to work on posters, we will take ideas from artists such as Jason Derulo because as a group we feel that his poster is a very succesful one and one that would appeal to us as a group.
Then we will have to think about where we would like to film our music video, we have had a few ideas and one that has stood out the most is one that we plan on going to Brighton and filming along the pier and on the sea front. Our song has an 'emotional' side to it and it is about a girlfriend and boyfriend. So we feel that shots along the beach would be good for our video.

Photoshop Editing

After me and my group done our photo shoot and were happy with the photos that we took, we then decided to go to the Macs and start editing the photos. Before I could do this I had to get failiar with the programme 'Photoshop' so that I could edit my photos to a good standard. So I did this and edited 2 photos as a sample and this what I ended up with.
Editing these photos were really simple, it was just a matter of filtering the background and choosing different effect that I wanted to use on the background. The first image of 3 of us members of the group was a simple effect called 'Neon Glow' which obviously gives a more night time effect whilst the other effect of Nathan on his own just sharpens some of the lines that we see in the image was an effect called 'Texturizer'

Task this year

The task that has been set for this year is to make a music video among my group. (Me, Tyler Chambers, Nathan Powell & Nathan Oliver). We have to choose our genre that we are going to do and then research, conventions CD covers, song lyrics etc. Then put these conventions into our music video, edit the images we have and end up with a music video project.

Costume Ideas

These are the 3 cotume ideas that we came up within the group, we have gone for 3 different approaches and think that they could all work and all match our genre.
I think that although the 3 different costumes are different in a few ways, particularly idea 1 because of the skinny jeans, high top trainers and skinny t shirt. tThis is obviously very different however Grime artists will still where this type of clothes however there are different types of artists that would suit these clothes more. For istance Tinie Tempah and Example are more than likely to be wearing these clothes whereas idea 2 would be more likely to be seen on an artist like Jay Z or T.I. As for the idea 1, as a group we feel that an artist such as Giggs would be wearing this type of clothing.
