Video Mise En Scene
Grime Genre
West Papua Torture Story
What happened?
In the video we see many civilians of West Papua being tortured in brutal ways such as; being kicked in the face, strangled, trodden on and just severely beaten. I think this is totally out of order and should not be happening, I think that there must be a problem in West Papua for this to be happening, the people that are torturing the civilians must feel out of power or need to get a lot of anger off their backs for them to want to do this because there is no other reasonable explanation. So I think that there is a power issue in West Papua and this needs to be resolved soon before this torture leads to death.
Would this of come to light if there was no mobile phone footage?
I don’t think that this would have come to light, because after seeing the footage it looks like a normal occurrence and that it has been happening for some time so therefore no one would have known that this was happening.
How has this type of reportage ( mobile phones used by non-journalists) influenced the way we receive and perceive information?
This type of reportage has opened the worlds eyes to many things that we didn’t think occurred however they do, I think it also makes the rest of the world realise the seriousness of what is happening in other countries and makes people realise how privileged we are.
What other examples have you seen recently?
An example of this that we have seen recently is the death of Neda Agha Soltan, we saw her die on a video phone during the Iranian protests in 2009. This is a very similar incident however people would have known about this because it was at a worldwide event
Favourite 2 Music Videos; Guardian website
Favourite 2 Music Videos:
Cee Lo Green – F**k You
My favourite music video on the Guardian website was the “Cee lo Green – F**k You” video. There were many reasons behind this being my favourite video and one of these is because the music has a very pop style to it. And pop is one of my favourite styles of music, also the video is an amusing one and also pretty different from regular popular videos.
I like the idea of a younger person doing the performance in the video, it gives younger people a chance to enjoy the video because alot of pop videos these days are very sex related and immediately blocks out the younger generation.
Another reason why I like this video is because of the way it is a type of storyline type of video and that we are progressing through the video with the song, this is because we the person in the video walking through several different locations.
However overall I think this was my favourite video because of the genre of the song and the way that the video will be targeting a younger audience than a normal pop video. My favourite part of this video is the fact that we are taken through the video throughout the song and are shown several different locations.
Radio Head – Live in Praha
I really enjoyed this video because of the way that the band got the audience involved and the way they pleased there audience. Even before the band began singing the crowd were screaming and clapping and getting excited about the bands performance.
Another thing that I like about this video is showing how good the bands talent and ability is, this shows that the band are not edited like some artists in the music industry at the moment and that they can both perform live and record a song in a studio.
Another thing that I like about this video is that the band are playing instruments, this shows that they are multi talented and that they are a complete band that can both sing and play instruments.
My favourite part of this video is the instrumental parts of the song, it shows really good quality in music and instrument playing and shows that the band are very versatile and also enjoy their music, this is because alot of artists neglect instruments in their songs and just sing and rely on the rest of the band/partners to play the instruments.

Performance in Music Videos
Giggz – Look What The Cat Dragged In; Grime.
There isn’t much performance in this video, which is typical of a Grime video, for the majority of the video we see Giggz standing in the same position, occasionally he will dance but not for long. We see lots of women in the video, which is also seen a lot in Grime videos, we see the women dancing for the majority of the video or we see the women around Giggz himself.
We see a lot of pointing towards the audience and making eye contact from Giggz, he points towards the audience and also himself almost as if to say; im the one you should be looking at.
So looking at a very typical Grime video; we see that Grime videos tend to not have a lot of performance in them from the artist themselves but the people around the artist use a lot of performance.
The artist themselves tend to stand in one position for the majority of the music video trying their best to look cool around there group of friends.
Kings Of Leon – Sex On Fire; Rock
This video is a very conventional rock video, in mise en scene is very dark, the costume is very rock like, i.e. vests, dark clothes and lots of jewellery. We see lots of instruments which is seen in a lot of rock music videos.
The performance is what you would expect to see in most music videos, a “crazy” type of performance, there is one part of the video where we see 3 of the group are pinning down the other person in the group which makes the audience ask the question. “what are they doing?”
We don’t see much dancing, again this is expected from this type of video because the main type of performance we expect to see is instrument playing. However we do see lip syncing, and making eye contact with the audience which is common in most videos let alone rock videos.

Katy Perry – Teenage Dream; Pop
Compared to a regular Pop video this video is quite different, and very different compared to Katy Perry’ previous videos. For instance ‘I kissed a girl’ and ‘California girls’. Where we see a lot of dancing and over the top dancing with a sexual tone to the video. Whereas this video has no dancing but still has a very sexual side to it.
This video is different because she has swapped over the top dancing to over the top sexual scenes; this shows that she is a good versatile artist because this song is currently number 2 in the UK Charts (14th September 2010)
Compared to regular pop and Katy Perry videos this video lacks performance, because we only see her on her feet for about 10 seconds of the video. The rest of the video she is laying on a bed or sitting in a car.

Photoshop Editing
Editing these photos were really simple, it was just a matter of filtering the background and choosing different effect that I wanted to use on the background. The first image of 3 of us members of the group was a simple effect called 'Neon Glow' which obviously gives a more night time effect whilst the other effect of Nathan on his own just sharpens some of the lines that we see in the image was an effect called 'Texturizer'

Costume Ideas
These are the 3 cotume ideas that we came up within the group, we have gone for 3 different approaches and think that they could all work and all match our genre.
